APRODEV POLICY BRIEF on the Special Safeguard Mechanism in the WTO, November 2009 The study was published by Bread for all and its partners in the European Network of protestant organizations (Aprodev). It analyses, to what extent the current trade rules contribute to food insecurity in countries of the global South. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has established so called Safeguard Mechanisms that should serve countries in the South to protect their markets in order to guarantee food security. However, the study shows that these Safeguard Measures are very complicated to implement - what makes them highly ineffective. The study points out that fair international trade rules are needed because the current trade system contributes to the increasing number of hungry people in the world. Download (pdf) »
